“If we are willing to see, there is poetry in our human details that are so similar to the process and life of these paintings.”

A conundrum of visual perception is that surface is not the totality, but one of several that combine to manifest meaning. Perception is pliable. In my work I am abstracting perception to shape reality. There is unity and beauty that under girds everything. My intention with these paintings is to illuminate this truth. I want to create revelatory images that serve as windows where we may see our world and ourselves with an open mind.

Conventional knowledge abstracts events, experience, and existence into concepts and words. The ordinary act of seeing employs these abstractions. Though they are necessary for understanding our environment, they fall short of revealing what lies beneath the surface of our conventions. For me, only the layering, deconstruction, and abstraction of an image will allow for expression of my multi-tiered sense of reality.

Cycles of time, change and our inherent fragility is shared with everything around us. If we are willing to see, there is poetry in our human details that are so similar to the process and life of these paintings. I want to combine in my work a sense of past and present, of the interdependent web of existence, and the constancy of flux.

I am a fine art painter, based in Northern California. My experience as a visual artist and an art educator in higher education began over 25 years ago. As an educator, I believe in creating an environment that encourages communication, collaboration, and the exploration of personal and creative growth. As a fine art painter, I work with acrylics and am compelled to explore experimental processes. I work within the genre of expressive abstraction, seeking to provide the viewer with an aesthetic, visual, and perceptual experience through my work. I enjoy exploring layers of visual complexity and apply paint to create tactility, and a physicality, evidencing my hand in my work. I am equally interested in conceptual complexity and explore linguistic ideas to engage with my viewer and encourage inquiry and discovery in the work.
